About Us

I'm a native son of the "Hawkeye State," born in Carroll, Iowa.  My Dad was in the newspaper business and we moved many times over my early childhood from one end of Iowa to the other.

I graduated from Grundy Center High School in Grundy Center Iowa, and attended Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls where I played baseball and basketball.  During my sophomore year our basketball team was ranked 3rd in the Nation and the following year won the National Junior College Basketball Championship.

I graduated from Mankato State College with a double major in sociology and corrections while living in St. James, MN.  I spent most of my summers playing baseball and fast pitch softball.  St. James was well known for the excellent fast pitch teams during the late 70's and 80's.  During the winter months I bowled and played basketball.  With all my sports activities in St. James, I just never had the urge to move on - so I've been here ever since.

I worked a number of years for a local manufacturing firm in the data processing department, and then in their sales department.

I went  to an insurance meeting with a friend,  who was an agent for National Farmers Union Insurance.   That was in the fall of 1982, and I have been with Farmers Union Insurance ever since.

When my body started telling me it was time to hang up the ball glove and the BB shoes, I became an  avid hunter.  I enjoy hunting in Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wyoming.  How was I able to get all this hunting in?  Well, I was single until August of 2005.  My wife and I were married the day after my 57th birthday (first time).  I not only got a wonderful partner for the rest of my life,  I also gained a new hunting buddy, my wife's 12 year old daughter. My wife is a local girl so we we have a lot of family in the area. 

My two hunting dogs also need year round attention.  I'm a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Sons of the Legionnaires.  I was recently re-elected for a fifth term as the first ward alderman for the City of St. James.  I'm also the charitable gambling manager for the local Eagles Club which over time has grown to be almost a full time job.

I am certified with the Minnesota BCA to instruct individuals wishing to obtain a permit-to-carry, and teach classes twice a year

I run a one man agency, and enjoy developing a relationship with each of my clients that they can count on.  When working with a new client I take the point of view "I've been where you are".  In other words, most people don't know a lot about insurance or what their needs may really be.

The one expression I use when working with someone new is that getting a quote is "the one thing in this world that won't cost you a penny---it's free"  People really do appreciate an agent that will take the time to explain in a lay person's terms what insurance is all about.

St. James is a small rural town with a population of about 4650.  It is located 40 miles west of Mankato and just north of the Iowa border.  It's a very warm and friendly community and if one ever needs anything, the people here are ready to help out.  I guess that's why after all these years I never once felt the desire to leave.
