Community Activities

Don's involvement in the community can be tied to his position as the charitable gambling manage for the St. James Eagles Club.  Since the Eagles moved into their new location at 701 1st Ave S in St. James back in 2002, their gaming operation has grown from a few thousand dollars to around $700,000 a year.  Don's main job, besides all the record keeping, is to make sure funds are channeled to those in the community that need it.

The Eagles donate thousands of dollars every year to the City, the County, the local hospital, the school system, and the fire and ambulance departments.  Funds are also donated for programs in many of the smaller communities located in Watonwan County.

Perhaps the biggest benefactor of these funds are those many needy individuals that request help on an almost daily basis from the Eagles.  Don is the person responsible for making sure the donation process operates within the State guidelines.

Don has been a member of the local Sons of the Legionnaires for a number of years qualifying for membership through his father's activities with the military during WW2.

Don attained a Second Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do a number of years ago and is still able to work with the local club helping the youth of this community who wish to attain the same.

Don's best exposure to the citizens of St. James and the surrounding area has been the last 16 years of sitting on the City Council.  Don has always maintained an open door policy with all citizens and if someone couldn't visit in Don's office, they were always welcome to give him a call.  Don will be the first one to say that although it's been interesting and fun sitting on the Council there have been times that decisions made as a councilman have cost him business.  However, that didn't prevent him from running and winning a fifth term as First Ward Alderman for the City of St. James.

Don has put in 21 years as a firearm safety instructor and has enjoyed working with all the kids not only in the class room but also in the field. The kids today are the future of the sport of hunting and Don sees a very rocky road for kids coming of age to the sport of hunting.
