About Us

I was born in Mitchell, SD, raised on the family farm near Delmont and graduated from high school there in 1967. I attended a year of college in Springfield and worked for one year in West Bend, Wisconsin before being drafted into the army. After being discharged, I purchased the grocery store in Delmont in 1972.

In 1975, I married Marsha Ulmer and we continued to manage the store until 1980. While in Delmont, Marsha and I had two children: Rachel and Sara. In 1980 I joined QBE Farmers Union Insurance as an agent in Wagner, SD. Five months later we relocated to Menno, SD where I managed the QBE Farmers Union Insurance Agency there. Menno is my wife's hometown and there was quite an extended family in the area. We became quite active in the community as volunteers for numerous organizations. Three children were added to our family, Teddy, Timothy and David.

South Dakota Insurance

One of my passions in life is providing a service for the many elderly clients who need assistance with the little things. Being there to answer questions and helping each person understand how to cope with ever-changing regulations and policies makes their lives easier and relieves the stress of uncertainty.

Our office staff consists of my wife Marsha and my son-in-law Johann Stokes. Occasionally, our daughter Rachel will step in if Johann is away with National Guard duties.

My family and I have been very active in our church and Sunday School. We have taught for many years and I have served several terms as chairman and vice chairman. My wife is an active EMT, firefighter and storm spotter. To say she is dedicated is an understatement. Everyone in the area knows and understands our commitment to the community and relies on us for many needs, both inside and outside of the insurance office.

We are also active in 4-H. We have a small acreage on the south end of town and encouraged our children to raise sheep, rabbits, goats, beef cattle, dairy calves, chickens, ducks, geese and pigeons. It taught them responsibility and good social skills. Now that we have only one active 4-H member, we have scaled down to just goats and chickens. Our youngest son also participates in Performing Arts, football, basketball and track. Our family vacation is during the South Dakota State Fair.
