Community Activities
I have been a member of the American Legion since 1972, joining after my return to Delmont from the Armed Forces. I served as Treasurer for over eight years. When we moved to Menno, I transferred my membership here and have served as Post Commander, Vice Commander, Secretary, and am now the Chaplain. The Legion Post conducts classes in Flag Etiquette, sponsors essay contests on patriotism, supports students who attend Boys State, places flags on Main Street for national holidays, and works with other community organizations for fundraising. The Color Guard marches in the Fourth of July and Homecoming parades.
It is currently my responsibility to present a flag to the widow or family of the deceased at a veteran's funeral. We also provide a firing squad salute and arrange for the playing of "Taps" to honor our fallen soldiers.
I have served on the City Council as an alderman from my ward. My wife and I are members of the Menno Area Development Corporation and she is a board member of this group. We work to attract new businesses to town and support the current businesses. We assist in keeping the local grocery store open by owning shares and volunteering our expertise in grocery store management.
We are active members in the Community Club since 1985. We volunteer for fundraisers that support the Care Center, Day Care and Menno Clinic. I served on the Menno Centennial Committee when the town celebrated 100 years of existence.
Our children were active in Sunday School and Youth Group. Our oldest son graduated from the School for the Deaf and participated in activities there, including school plays, drama and service events. Our daughters were cheerleaders and participated in band, chorus, volleyball, basketball, pep band and oral interpretation. Both were members of FFA and FHA. Our two youngest sons participated in football, basketball and track.
All of our children were active in 4-H. Our youngest son currently raises Alpine goats and exotic chickens. He joined the Performing Arts Troupe last year and plans to continue. Both he and his older brother were members of the Freeman Area Children's Choir.
Marsha has been a member of the Menno Ambulance Service since 1982 and has served as the Director since 2004. She took training as a Basic EMT and in 2001, advanced to Intermediate EMT. She schedules classes, order supplies and files the ambulance reports with the state. She completes 50-60 calls a year as she has been the only EMT in town during regular working hours. She joined the Menno Fire Department in 2003 and also volunteers as a storm spotter.
