The criteria we use to evaluate the type of home owners insurance to recommend to our clients:
We try and get a feel for them, what kind of position they hold in a job, a little bit about their financial picture. If they don’t own much we don’t try to push really high limits. If they have a lot of property we will push for the higher end coverage to protect that property. We want to provide the coverage that is appropriate for your specific needs. Your needs will most likey be quite a bit different than the needs of your neighbors, friends, and family.

  • How well it’s kept up
  • Location of the home - rates are cheaper as you are closer to the fire department. Within 8 miles of the fire department, and within view of at least 2 other homes
 
No state minimum coverage required for homeowners insurance, but insurance companies do have minimums. The only entity really urging you to get insurance on your home would be a lender.
