Community Activities
We are proud to be members of this community, and we have some interesting things going on.
The Buffalo Bill Statue is one of our favorites around town. This magnificent sculpture of Buffalo Bill about to bring down a buffalo is on Hwy 83 and 2nd Ave. It was created by sculptor and painter Charlie Norton. In 1868 William F. Cody---Buffalo Bill was making a living as a contract hunter, providing buffalo to feed the crews laying tracks for the Kansas Pacific Railroad. At the same time, William Comstock, also known as Buffalo Bill made his living as a contract buffalo hunter feeding the soldiers a Fort Wallace.
To determine the real "Buffalo Bill" a contest was held west of Oakley. Bill Cody brought down 69 buffalo and Bill Comstock brought down 46 buffalo. From That day forward, the legend of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody was born.
Other attractions include Fick Fossil Museum----which features Cretaceous Period fossils from the personal collection of Earnest and Vi Fick, as well as many fossils found by the Sternburgs, who did extensive digs in the area
Monument Rocks---are located 20 miles south of Oakley. They are also known as the Chalk Pyramids and are a natural formation that served as a landmark for pioneers and American Indians.
We enjoy learning about these historical sites located in our community.
