About Us

I took over the agency in Windom, MN from Elmer Deutschmann.  He was the Farmers Union agent for 52 years and was looking to retire.  I have been working with people for 20 years and enjoy the close contact with trying to help them solve problems.  Insurance is an area that I can be of service to both individuals and their families.

The Farmers Union Agency is grounded in the State and local communities since 1945, doing business in small rural towns and with farms and ranches.  This commitment and service to the people that live in Rural America is the No. 1 priority for this agency and the National Farmers Union Insurance Company.  We work hard to make all the connections at the home and on the farm to keep our friends insurance coverage up to date and appropriate for their families.

I was born in Southwest MN on a farm near Fulda with six brothers and one sister.  We milked cows and fed cattle on the 160 acre farm and dad kept us busy doing chores on the farm.  I started farming in 1969 with my mother after my dad died of cancer.  I still operate 250 acres. 

I was elected to the Minnesota State House of Representatives and worked with the constituents of rural towns in southwest Minnesota.  I enjoyed being the connection between my rural constituents and their Minnesota State Government to get the equitable and fair consideration that they deserve.  The contacts I made in this capacity are currently my insurance clients.  Now I help protect their family, income and assets from the perils that are out of their control. 

Southwest Minnesota and the towns like Windom, Fulda, Westbrook, Slayton, Jackson, Lakefield are good places to raise a family and do business.  People here are very caring, friendly, with common sense and the conviction to do what is right for their family and friends.

Our agency is committed to keeping connected to our clients and their business.  Our agency staff includes Ted Winter (licensed agent) and Elmer Deutschmann the former agent here in Windom.  Ted works with clients in sales and enters changes for them to insure correct coverage for their business and families.  Elmer helps with answering the phone, filing the paperwork and covers the office when Ted is out working with clients on coverage issues.

We are an agency that believes you should see your agent for more than to pay the premium.  In order to be a good advisor to your family and business, I feel it is necessary to meet you at your place to go over your total insurance needs.  This should be done at least once each year at a time and place that fits your busy schedule.  Good service means maintaining the personal connection that keeps the lines of communication open in good times and at times when trouble is at your door.

Our Farmers Union Insurance office is located on the Northwest corner of the Cottonwood County Courthouse square, the heart of the downtown business district.
